Our earliest known member! The Stratford-upon-Avon Group of Advanced Motorists began life as a sub-Group of Coventry and District Group of Advanced Motorists in March 1983 and achieved full group status in 1984. From then on, the Group has grown steadily, training members of the public to a standard of driving whereby they can pass the Advanced Driving Test. Charity status was granted in January 1993 (no 1016119), marking quite an achievement in the Group's history. The current membership of the Group stands at over 250 paid-up members, both Full members - that is, those who have passed their Advanced Driving Test - and Associates - those who, like you, are training and preparing for their test. Current Group membership fees are £10 covering all Full members at one address and £35.00 for Associate members. In the past, two lottery grants have enriched the training offered, one by temporarily reducing the price of courses and the second by developing the Observers' driving and communication skills. In 1995 IAM Headquarters rewarded the Group for its continued success in running short courses, with the presentation to the Group of the 'Shropshire Shield', awarded annually to the Group that has made the most progress during the previous year. In 1997, the former Group Secretary Chris Hill was awarded the prestigious 'Fred Welch Rose-bowl', a national award presented to the individual who has contributed most to the aims of the Institute both nationally and locally. At the 2001 All Groups' Conference, the Stratford group was nominated for a Group Achievement award - one of 12 groups out of a total of over 250 which put it into the top 2% of groups in the country. In 2002, not only were we nominated again but we were presented with the top award sponsored by Pinnacle Insurance Plc which consisted of a cut glass trophy and a cheque for the group of £1000! The Group publishes a Newsletter 3 times a year, containing Group news and views. Members are encouraged to use this medium to express their thoughts and ideas about the Group. All contributions should be made via the Chairman or the Group Secretary.
